Fifty firefighters with 13 vehicles remain on the fireground, supported by crews from Makarska and Split, while drones are being used to monitor the burned area. The latest Croatian Firefighting Association estimate remains about 1,000 hectares affected. The priority is now deep mop-up, detection of residual heat, safe restoration of services and a formal damage assessment—not perimeter-wide attack.
The fire in 10 seconds
The incident is now under control, but it is not yet officially extinguished. HRT’s 09:47 update on 16 August reports 50 firefighters and 13 vehicles still on scene, with additional support from Makarska and Split and drone surveillance over the fireground. The latest HVZ area estimate remains about 1,000 hectares. This is now a mop-up, monitoring and recovery operation: residual heat and damaged structures still matter, but the available evidence no longer supports describing the incident as an expanding wildfire.
The wildfire hit the classic Dalmatian coastal WUI
The fire started close to buildings, then ran through grass, low vegetation and pine into a linear chain of settlements along the Omiš Riviera. That is a textbook wildland–urban interface pattern: houses and transport sit directly below burnable slopes.
Wind turned a slope fire into a coast-facing emergency
HVZ explicitly identifies strong wind as a major spread driver. On this type of terrain, wind does not only accelerate the head fire; it also increases ember transport, complicates aerial attack and can suddenly push the fire downslope into buildings and roads.
D8 is both access route and vulnerability corridor
The official Omiš civil-protection plan highlights that, on the eastern coast, evacuation between the D8 road and the shoreline may also need to be carried out by sea. That single sentence explains the geometry of the problem: when the road is stressed, the sea becomes a parallel escape option.
The incident is now a controlled fireground
By 09:47 on 16 August HRT reported the fire under control but not extinguished. The operational focus has shifted to drone-supported surveillance, deep mop-up, structural safety, infrastructure restoration and confirming that residual heat cannot re-establish sustained spread.
The wildfire is under control but not yet officially extinguished. The best-supported current picture is ≈1,000 hectares affected, 50 firefighters and 13 vehicles still on scene, drone surveillance across the fireground, one fatality, and an HVZ operational tally of 43 injured including three firefighters. About 2,500 people were evacuated or sheltered during the emergency phase. The remaining task is to make the fireground cold and safe enough for final extinguishment and recovery.
Better maps, cleaner geography: where the fire ran and why this coast is so sensitive
The two graphics below have been rebuilt to avoid the usual confusion between coast, slope and transport geometry. The first is a corrected corridor map from Omiš to Pisak. The second is a slope-to-shore operational section showing why a night fire here becomes immediately dangerous for people, houses and mobility.
From night run to next-day containment
The timeline separates the catastrophic first night from the successive containment updates, so changing area estimates and operational phases are not mixed together.
The Split-Dalmatia county emergency operations centre received the wildfire report at 20:15. The ignition zone lay close to structures in the Lokva Rogoznica area, immediately increasing structure-exposure risk.
During the night the fire spread through grass, low vegetation and pine forest under strong wind. The corridor of concern extended along the Omiš Riviera, affecting settlements and vehicles and forcing intense protection work around houses and roads.
Four CL-415 Canadairs were initially sent around 06:00, although they were later redirected to Pelješac. The Omiš sector continued with three Air Tractors, while reinforcements from several counties joined Split-Dalmatia forces on the ground.
HVZ reported that the situation had become more favourable, with no further spread and no active fire front. Firefighters remained engaged in edge security, smoke and hot-spot suppression, and in dealing with burned houses and the affected vehicle fleet.
HVZ raised the provisional affected-area estimate to about 1,000 hectares and reported that part of the fireground was still active on difficult-to-access terrain in the Omiš hinterland, despite the overall situation remaining more favourable.
HVZ kept the provisional area estimate at about 1,000 hectares. Crews continued work on burned structures and fire edges; one CL-415 had supported the morning operation and a Croatian Air Force helicopter was assigned for afternoon reconnaissance.

Controlled fireground, hot afternoon: the risk is local reactivation, not a new perimeter-wide run
DHMZ’s Omiš forecast updated at 11:16 places today’s maximum near 32.3 °C, with Monday near 32.6 °C. The national forecast calls for mostly sunny and hot conditions, with weak to moderate south-westerly wind on the Adriatic and only a local shower risk mainly in the Dalmatian interior. The current DHMZ warning table does not show a warning for the Split region. These conditions are much less aggressive than the wind-driven ignition night, but exposed fuels and residual heat can still dry and reactivate locally.
Today’s weather does not justify a dramatic spread forecast. The credible residual risk is smaller-scale: concealed heat in pine litter, burned structures or inaccessible slope pockets can produce smoke or flame as the afternoon warms. Drone surveillance is therefore operationally relevant because it can help prioritise ground inspection without implying that every thermal anomaly represents renewed wildfire spread.

DHMZ’s local model shows only about 0.3 mm. That is not enough to assume deep extinction of heavy fuels or structural hot spots.
Why this wildfire became dangerous so quickly
The event was not exceptional because it burned an immense mountain range. It was dangerous because it compressed fire behaviour, housing exposure and evacuation pressure into a very narrow strip of territory.
1. The terrain points straight at the coast
The inland side of the Omiš Riviera rises abruptly. A fire running down or across these slopes can reach the built strip quickly, especially when wind tilts flames, pushes embers and reduces the time available for structure defence.
2. Fuels are continuous enough to sustain rapid spread
HVZ explicitly names grass, low vegetation and pine forest. That is a dangerous combination on steep ground: fine fuels accelerate the run, while pine adds higher flame length, ember production and house-exposure potential.
3. The settlement chain is linear, not redundant
Omiš, Nemira, Stanići, Čelina, Ruskamen, Lokva Rogoznica, Medići, Mimice, Marušići and Pisak form a coastal chain with limited space between slope, road and sea. In practice, there are few redundant movement options.
4. The road problem is strategic, not only local
When one corridor must absorb evacuation movement, incoming engines, water logistics and police control, friction appears immediately. That is why the City of Omiš plan explicitly keeps the marine option on the table for the east-coast strip.
The latest morning update moves the fire one step further: it is now under control, but still not officially extinguished. That distinction matters. Residual heat, inaccessible slopes and damaged structures can still create local operational problems even when the incident no longer has a credible perimeter-wide spread signal.
The next operational questions
With the incident under control, the most relevant questions are now “when can it be officially declared extinguished?”, “where does residual heat remain?”, “which structures and trees are still unsafe?”, “how quickly can utilities and normal access be restored?” and “what does the final damage assessment show?”
Fireground progresses toward extinguishment
If drone and ground checks continue to find no meaningful reactivation, crews can progressively reduce resources, finish deep mop-up and move toward an official extinguishment declaration.
Extended mop-up and monitoring
The most likely scenario is a slow, labour-intensive closeout: smoke, hidden heat, damaged roofs, burned vehicles, unstable trees and occasional small flare-ups that are contained inside the controlled fireground.
Local reactivation inside the controlled area
The adverse case is a hot spot escaping deep mop-up and re-establishing flame near structures or difficult terrain. Current evidence does not support forecasting a repeat of the first-night run, but a local reactivation could still delay extinguishment and recovery.
Damage accounting must stay separate from fire behaviour
Damage assessment is now a central phase. Omiš officials say the formal process may take months. Roads have been cleared, burned vehicles are being removed and utility restoration is progressing. A rising damage total should not be confused with renewed fire spread.
