The deadly 16 August two-sector wildfire emergency on Salamis Island, west of Athens, is now best read as a post-front recovery and investigation case. Two people were killed, 593 people were evacuated by sea and later emergency reporting documented nine burn injuries. The latest direct main-incident Fire Service picture located by this review remains the morning of 17 August: no active front, fires largely extinguished and more than 200 firefighters with two helicopters retained for hotspot patrol. Greek Civil Protection later confirmed 22 affected buildings in Aianteio, including 5 red classifications. Investigative reporting has since narrowed the working hypotheses for the two starts, but no final official cause determination has been located. The burned-area figure remains deliberately pending because no consolidated authoritative perimeter or hectare total was found by the 23 August review.
The fire in 10 seconds
The main 16 August incident remains in a post-front phase. The latest direct Fire Service status located says that by the morning of 17 August there was no active front and the two fires were largely extinguished, with more than 200 firefighters and two helicopters remaining for hotspot patrol. Greek Civil Protection then completed the Aianteio building assessment: 22 affected buildings — 7 green, 10 yellow and 5 red, including 16 residences, 3 business premises and 3 other buildings. Reporting on the fire-investigation process now points to different hypotheses for the two starts: negligence is being examined strongly for Peristeria, while the second eastern-sector start remains under scrutiny for possible deliberate or other human ignition. These are investigative leads, not final determinations. No authoritative consolidated burned-area figure or later formal extinguishment wording was located by the 23 August cut-off.
An elderly couple were found dead near their home in the Peristeria area.
People were evacuated by sea from Saterli and Kolones with Coast Guard and supporting vessels.
Eight people with burns and one elderly person were transported during the emergency response.

Two reported fire sectors appeared within roughly 15 minutes
Public reporting places the first major fire near Peristeria in the south of the island and a second near Selinia in the east shortly afterwards. They were separated by several kilometres and had to be treated as distinct operational problems. This does not establish a common cause.
The critical metric is seven minutes, not hectares
A Greek Fire Service spokesperson quoted by AP said conditions allowed the fire to reach dangerous proportions and move toward nearby residential areas within seven minutes. That is a direct indicator of extremely compressed decision time in the WUI.
Sea evacuation changes the incident geometry
Coast guard vessels, firefighting craft and private boats created an additional evacuation route for beaches and exposed coastal pockets. On an island, maritime capacity is not a secondary detail: it can become part of life-safety strategy.
The post-fire evidence is improving, but two critical fields are still open
By 17 August there was no active front and crews were patrolling hotspots; the Aianteio damage ledger is now official. What remains unresolved is a consolidated authoritative burned-area figure and a final cause determination for the two reported starts. The investigation has advanced since the previous review. Greek reporting citing fire-investigation sources says the Peristeria start is being examined primarily as possible negligence linked to an open flame / combustible material at or near a residence, while the second eastern-sector start is being examined separately using witness statements and video, including the possibility of intentional ignition. No final official determination has been located. The two sectors must therefore remain analytically separate.

Why Salamina became dangerous so quickly
The incident combines Mediterranean dry fuels, strong wind, hilly terrain, fragmented housing and island evacuation constraints. The resulting risk is not a classic “remote forest fire” problem.
Wind-driven acceleration
Near-gale winds were reported during the most critical period. Strong flow can increase flame tilt, spotting and lateral spread while shortening the time available for residential protection.
Mixed wildland–urban interface
Peristeria and Selinia combine vegetation, roads, coastal development and dispersed homes. Fire can therefore move from fuel continuity into structure exposure within minutes.
Hilly island terrain
Salamis includes wooded hills above 300 m. Short slopes, ridges and drainage alignments can locally accelerate a wind-driven fire even without mountain-scale topography.
Simultaneous resource demand
Two separated sectors force command to split aerial, ground and protection resources while also keeping road and maritime evacuation options available.
From first report to a two-sector island emergency
The chronology below preserves the distinction between what was publicly reported, what changed during the response and what remains unverified.
The spreading-fire problem has become a hotspot, damage and investigation problem
The absence of an active front materially changes the operational reading. Suppression resources are no longer being judged primarily by outward spread, but by hotspot elimination, rekindle prevention, safe access, damage documentation and the investigation of two separate reported starts.
Hotspot patrol and rekindle prevention
With no active front reported, residual heat becomes the principal fire-control issue. Patrol, cooling and repeated checks around vegetation and structures are now more informative than flame-front imagery.
Damage classification now matters
The Aianteio inspection result converts early reports of “homes damaged” into a structured impact picture: 22 buildings assessed, including 5 red classifications.
Burned area still needs a validated source
The next major missing technical variable remains a reliable perimeter or burned-area estimate. Until one is tied to an authoritative source, satellite hotspots should remain detection evidence rather than hectares.
Operational spread has largely ended, but hotspot patrol, damage assessment and cause investigation remain active parts of the incident lifecycle. The absence of flames should not be confused with a complete technical record.
Three questions now matter more than forward-spread scenarios
Because the main 16 August incident no longer has an active front in the latest direct operational update located, forward-spread scenarios are obsolete. The useful analytical focus is now final status wording, recovery, damage quantification, cause evidence and a validated burned-area perimeter. A separate small fire near Prophet Elias on 18 August was bounded rapidly and should not be merged into this incident record.
Close out residual heat without rekindle
More than 200 firefighters and two helicopters remained after the active fronts disappeared. Continued hotspot reduction and no renewed evacuation signal are the practical indicators that suppression is holding.
Turn inspections into a complete damage ledger
The first structured assessment identifies 22 affected buildings in Aianteio. The next step is to connect building classifications with final repair, loss and assistance data.
Resolve final cause and mapped burned area
The investigation now has differentiated working hypotheses for Peristeria and the eastern sector, but no final official cause determination has been located. A consolidated authoritative burned-area figure is also still missing. Those remain the two largest technical gaps in the case.
Six data points that would complete the post-fire record
The incident has already changed phase. What matters now is completing the evidence: final status wording, mapped area, damage, investigation and recovery information.
Formal final status wording
The best available update says no active front and largely extinguished. A direct final Fire Service controlled / extinguished declaration would close the operational-status field.
Validated burned area
Official mapping or a clearly attributed Copernicus/EFFIS product should replace the current “pending” area field.
Final injury outcome
Nine people were reported transported or injured; subsequent medical outcomes should be separated from the initial emergency count.
Recovery and access normalisation
Road, beach and local access normalisation, along with assistance measures, document the transition from emergency to recovery.
Damage ledger beyond Aianteio
The 22-building Aianteio assessment is now verified. Any wider island damage count should be kept separate unless officially consolidated.
Cause investigation
The inquiry has moved beyond a generic “unknown”: negligence is a reported leading hypothesis for Peristeria, while the second eastern-sector start is being examined separately, including possible deliberate ignition. The field should still remain “under investigation” until authorities publish a final conclusion.

The value of an international wildfire analysis is not more numbers. It is a clean separation between confirmed facts, reported facts, technical interpretation and unresolved uncertainty.
